I’m both happy and honoured to be included on Sri Lanka’s best-dressed list, especially since looking stylish is never something I strive for. For me, staying true to who I am is the key to standing out. I choose pieces that reflect my personality and make me feel authentic, confident, and comfortable. Dressing up is about feeling good in my own skin; not impressing others. Fashion is my personal journey of self-expression, where I focus on empowerment and happiness through what I wear.
Do you have any favourite designers or go-to brands that you turn to for special occasions or everyday style?
I’m a huge fan of so many incredible local designers like Charini Suriyage, Natharlea Liyanage, Darshi Keerthisena, FrokMe by Natalie Jayasuriya, Lois London by Radhika Hernandez, Michael Wijesuriya, Sonali Dharmawardena, and many more. Sri Lanka has an amazing pool of talent in the fashion and design space! When it comes to global brands, I’m drawn to the sophistication of Victoria Beckham, Ted Baker, Chloe, Massimo Dutti, Philipp Plein, and Desigual, with a few luxury pieces from Valentino, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, and Christian Louboutin always catching my eye.
What advice would you give to someone aspiring to elevate their fashion sense and build a wardrobe that reflects their individuality?
Dress in a way that makes you feel good, not to impress others. Embrace a minimalist approach and invest in timeless pieces that will stand the test of time. Get creative by repurposing old items to craft new looks. Above all, stay true to yourself and wear your confidence with pride.

How would you describe your personal style, and what influences or inspires it most?
My style is rooted in minimalism and sophistication. What truly inspires me is the balance of comfort and authenticity; I gravitate towards clean lines and timeless pieces that feel effortless and true to my personality.
What does fashion mean to you, and how does it reflect your personality or values?
Fashion, to me, is a form of self-expression that should align with inner values rather than external expectations. It’s a reflection of my commitment to sustainability, quality, and timeless design; choosing pieces that not only look good but also stand the test of time.
You’ve consistently made it onto Sri Lanka’s best-dressed list; what’s your secret to staying stylish and standing out year after year?
I believe in staying true to your personal aesthetic rather than chasing trends. Style should be a reflection of who you are, not just what’s in fashion at the moment.
Do you have any favourite designers or go-to brands that you turn to for special occasions or everyday style?
I remain a strong advocate for South Asian designers who showcase exceptional craftsmanship and textile artistry. For special occasions, I seek out pieces that celebrate our region’s rich heritage while embracing a modern edge. In my everyday style, I invest in versatile pieces from designers who prioritize quality and timeless design; effortlessly blending tradition with contemporary elegance.
What advice would you give to someone aspiring to elevate their fashion sense and build a wardrobe that reflects their individuality?
Start by understanding your personal style rather than blindly following trends. Invest in foundational pieces that can be styled in multiple ways, creating a versatile and timeless wardrobe. Most importantly, prioritize fit; because the right fit isn’t just about looking good, it’s what elevates your style from ordinary to exceptional.
Sonia Hirdaramani
How would you describe your personal style, and what influences or inspires it the most?
My style (if you can even call it that!) has definitely evolved over the years. When I first moved here from NYC, my wardrobe was almost entirely black. But island life has slowly infused bright pops of color into my closet. Motherhood and my 40s have also played a big role in shaping my style; it’s all about comfort first these days, with a touch of flair to keep things fun!
What does fashion mean to you, and how does it reflect your personality or values?
In New York, my outfits were dictated by my activities; work meant business suits, and nights out called for bold dresses. But as I’ve gotten older, dressing has become more of an expression of my mood or the vibe I’m in. Some days it’s classic NYC black, other days it’s tropical vibes, boho chic, or laid-back athleisure. My style is as eclectic as my life itself.
You’ve consistently made it onto Sri Lanka’s best-dressed list; what’s your secret to staying stylish and standing out year after year?
Honestly, I think it’s because I focus on wearing things that genuinely appeal to me, rather than trying to imitate anyone else’s style. While I can appreciate good fashion on others, I rarely feel the urge to covet something someone else is wearing. We’re all inspired by what we see around us, but I like to interpret that through my own unique lens. If I’m considered stylish, I honestly think it’s because I’m comfortable being myself; fashion faux pas and all!
Do you have any favorite designers or go-to brands that you turn to for special occasions or everyday style?
I have a ‘flavor of the month’ approach to fashion. As I get older, my body shape is constantly changing (and not always in the best ways, haha!), so the brands that fit me perfectly a year ago just don’t work the same anymore. That means I’m always experimenting to find what works best now!
What advice would you give to someone aspiring to elevate their fashion sense and build a wardrobe that reflects their individuality?
Don’t overthink it; just gravitate towards what truly catches your eye! And never blindly follow a trend if it doesn’t resonate with you or suit your style.
SHAESTHA FERNANDO
How would you describe your personal style, and what influences or inspires it the most?
I’m not sure there’s one word to describe my style; maybe eclectic, adventurous, or even a bit odd! It’s always changing. I’m mostly inspired by travel, observing how different cultures interpret the same trends. International designers also inspire me, with current favourites being Ulla Johnson and the timeless Rosie Assoulin. Lately, I’ve also been really drawn to Kelly Rutherford’s style. It’s a constant evolution, influenced by what I see and experience around me.
What does fashion mean to you, and how does it reflect your personality or values?
I love fashion because, to me, it’s a beautiful way to reflect or express my mood rather than just my personality. On tougher days, fashion becomes my “fake it till you make it” tool, where looking good helps build confidence. It’s amazing how once you look good, the positive feelings follow. My mood and how I dress are always connected; they go hand in hand and truly shape how I feel.
You’ve constantly made it onto Sri Lanka’s best dressed list - what’s your secret to staying stylish and standing out year after year?
I love the unpredictability in my dress sense. I’m drawn to contradictions in design, especially when there’s something that “seems” out of place or like it doesn’t quite belong. This element of surprise adds a unique touch to my style, making it feel more personal and dynamic. Whether it’s an unexpected combination of pieces or an unconventional accessory, these little contradictions in design always make my styling stand out.
Do you have any favourite designers or go-to brands that you turn to for special occasions or everyday style?
For my everyday wardrobe, I mostly go for high-street brands, with a good number of pieces being hand-me-downs from my mom. For special occasions, 98% of my outfits are custom-made. I’ve also found some beautiful pieces from designers like PR, Charini, TDC, and Sonali Dharmawardene. One of my most recent favourites is from Onali Silva; her work truly resonates with my style.
What advice would you give someone aspiring to elevate their fashion sense and build a wardrobe that reflects their individuality?
Authenticity is key. I never fully replicate or follow trends because why should I look like someone else? I dress for myself, which means I don’t let outside opinions dictate my choices. Staying true to who I am is what matters most, and it’s what allows me to feel confident and comfortable in my own skin.
MINOLI RATNAYAKE
How would you describe your personal style, and what influences or inspires it the most?
My personal style is currently deeply influenced by sustainability and the vintage, pre-loved circular fashion movement. Having co-founded an Instagram store, Lata Pata Vintage (soon to be online) with my best friend Leesha Captain, I’m fully embracing the mindset of recycling, repurposing, and re-wearing. It’s all about curating a wardrobe that supports sustainability while keeping style fresh and meaningful.
What does fashion mean to you, and how does it reflect your personality or values?
I used to think fashion was all about style, but now I feel it’s become something fleeting, with endless seasons and countless collections. These days, I’m more drawn to style and how it allows you to evolve in your own space. When it comes to values, I believe buying pre-loved and vintage items promotes a more intentional way of shopping, and it’s definitely kinder to the planet.
You’ve consistently made it onto Sri Lanka’s best-dressed list; what’s your secret to staying stylish and standing out year after year?
That’s a tough one to answer! I think it’s all about enjoying the process of dressing up or down, having fun with it, and not taking yourself too seriously!
Do you have any favourite designers or go-to brands that you turn to for special occasions or everyday style?
Victoria Beckham for her beautifully tailored, flattering pieces that are made to last. Dolce & Gabbana for their love of florals, lace, and anything leopard print! Iora at Milk for their stunning block-print dresses and pyjamas made from the softest cotton and organic dyes!
What advice would you give to someone aspiring to elevate their fashion sense and build a wardrobe that reflects their individuality?
Reflect your individuality by buying what you truly love and will wear often. Don’t follow trends blindly; focus on quality and craftsmanship instead of fast fashion. Choose pieces that will stand the test of time and opt for pre-loved and vintage items whenever possible. These unique finds will help you discover your own style while offering something special and sustainable.
VILESHKA WIJEGUNAWARDENA
How would you describe your personal style, and what influences or inspires it the most?
My personal style is ever evolving and deeply tied to how I feel on any given day. Some days, I lean towards casual, effortless pieces; other times, I’m drawn to classic or minimalist looks. And then there are days when I enjoy experimenting with eclectic elements. For me, fashion is all about fluidity; it’s not about sticking to one defined style, but embracing the freedom to express different facets of who I am.
What does fashion mean to you, and how does it reflect your personality or values?
Fashion is a form of self-expression; an extension of my personality, mood, and even my aspirations. It’s a creative outlet that lets me tell my story without saying a word. Whether I’m wearing something that makes me feel confident, empowered, or simply comfortable, fashion reflects who I am at that moment. My style is constantly evolving, just like my journey as a woman, an entrepreneur, and a mother. At its core, fashion is about authenticity, and for me, it’s always about staying true to what feels right.
You’ve consistently made it into Sri Lanka’s best-dressed list; what’s your secret to staying stylish and standing out year after year?
I don’t follow trends blindly; I follow what works for me. Understanding my body shape and dressing in a way that complements it has been key. I also believe in balance, mixing statement pieces with subtle elements or blending timeless classics with a modern twist. Ultimately, confidence is the best thing you can wear, and when you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shines through effortlessly.
Do you have any favourite designers or go-to brands for special occasions and everyday style?
For my everyday wardrobe, I naturally gravitate towards Spring & Summer, a brand that perfectly aligns with both my personal style and my work in the fashion industry. It’s versatile, stylish, and ideal for day-to-day wear. When it comes to special occasions, I don’t have one go-to designer or brand, it all depends on the event and how I want to feel in that moment. Sometimes, I opt for custom-made pieces, and other times, I enjoy mixing and matching different items to create a unique, personalized look.
What advice would you give to someone aspiring to elevate their fashion sense and build a wardrobe that reflects their individuality?
Start by understanding your body type and what works best for you; that’s the foundation of great personal style. Once you’ve got that down, invest in high-quality basics that serve as the building blocks of your wardrobe. From there, it’s all about experimenting, layering, and mixing pieces in a way that feels authentic to you. Fashion isn’t about fitting into a mold; it’s about embracing what makes you feel your absolute best.
SHYAMALI EDIRIWEERA
How would you describe your personal style, and what influences or inspires it the most?
My personal style is a bit of a paradox. On one hand, I love clean lines, neutral tones, and perfectly tailored basics; pieces that should feel effortless, not fussy. On the other hand, I love to dive into creative expression. That’s when I embrace trends, mix in some vintage finds, play with bold colours, and go for exaggerated accessories that add sophistication and elegance. While I do draw inspiration from fashion icons, I’m not all about social media influencers. My style is all about blending what feels right to me, not what’s trending on the feed.
What does fashion mean to you, and how does it reflect your personality or values?
Fashion, to me, is all about self-expression. I can’t deny that the clothes we wear have a powerful impact on our mood and confidence. But as Alexander McQueen once said, “Fashion should be a form of escapism and not a form of imprisonment.” It’s about feeling free and comfortable in what you wear, not confined by trends or expectations.
You’ve constantly made it onto Sri Lanka’s best dressed list; what’s your secret to staying stylish and standing out year after year?
I’ve never approached my wardrobe with the goal of being recognized as one of the best dressed. For me, style is less about accolades and more about personal expression. That said, if I were to define what contributes to my style, it would start with a meticulous attention to detail; making sure clothes fit perfectly, choosing high-quality fabrics, and thoughtfully adding accessories that elevate the overall look. Most importantly, my style reflects my individuality and confidence. True style isn’t just about how you look, but about the authenticity and attitude you bring to it.
Do you have any favourite designers or go-to brands that you turn to for special occasions or everyday style?
I don’t have a specific designer or brand I rely on for special occasions. There’s a wide range of fashion designers, from West to East, whose fabulous creations I admire, and my purchases from them are more spontaneous. I’ve always valued craftsmanship in fashion, supporting artisans who preserve and elevate traditional techniques. For me, it’s less about the label and more about the artistry and heritage behind the pieces.
What advice would you give someone aspiring to elevate their fashion sense and build a wardrobe that reflects their individuality?
Know your body type and choose clothes that flatter your figure, highlighting your best features. Invest in quality basics; these are the foundation of a well-rounded wardrobe. Step out of your comfort zone and observe how others wear clothes. Train your eye for detail and learn from what you see. Master the art of layering and playing with textures for a more dynamic look.
Don’t shy away from experimenting with accessories; they can transform an outfit. Pay attention to your footwear. It’s more than just shoes; it’s a statement that completes your ensemble and elevates the whole look.
You don’t have to follow every trend to have great style. Trends shouldn’t control your wardrobe; it’s about what works for you. Embrace the styles that make you feel confident, powerful, elegant, and most importantly, uniquely you.
