IN CONVERSATION WITH ANGUS TSUI

During London Fashion Week 2025, I had the privilege of attending Angus Tsui’s runway show at Protein Studios in Shoreditch. The atmosphere was electric, with a perfect fusion of creativity and innovation showcased in each design. Angus Tsui’s collection stood out for its bold, futuristic aesthetic, blending traditional elements with modern twists. The experience was a reminder of the endless possibilities in fashion, and it was inspiring to witness such artistic expression first-hand. The show reflected the exciting, ever-evolving landscape of the fashion industry, particularly in a city that thrives on diversity and originality.

Q Angus, your brand has been a pioneer in sustainable fashion since its inception. How do you ensure that sustainability is at the core of each design without compromising on aesthetic appeal?

Experimental, futuristic, and visionary define our label. We transform imagination into reality through organic exoskeleton constructions, bold colour combinations, and sustainable textiles. Each season, we collaborate with manufacturers and textile companies to develop innovative, eco-conscious designs. Recently, we partnered with The Billie Upcycling by Novetex, creating waterless recycled knitwear that blends sustainability with a futuristic aesthetic.

Q Your work with NGOs like Greenpeace and Redress is inspiring. Can you tell us more about your involvement with ANCares and how your educational charity is shaping the next generation of designers?

Fashion can be complex, but consumer behaviour drives change. ANCares, our educational charity project, promotes sustainability through global collaborations, workshops, and exhibitions. Partnering with DHL Express, we upcycled retired uniforms into a capsule collection, tackling uniform waste while supporting sustainable fashion. All profits go to Redress, helping emerging designers create a more sustainable industry.

No matter which city we are based in, it is always necessary to identify your brand’s characteristics and aesthetics, these are something that can bring us to the audience around the world without any limitations.

Q You’ve collaborated with big names like DHL and American Eagle. What have you learned from these collaborations, and how have they influenced your own design philosophy?

When collaborating with high profile brands we realize it is impossible to solve the problem by our own in this industry, it is because the textile wastes and negative impacts are generated in every single second. Creativity is undoubtedly one of our strongest strengths when it comes to proposing solutions to these issues, we can definitely create or recreate some products that have a longer life cycle while minimizing the negative impact to both our industry and environment.

Q Hong Kong is known for its fusion of cultures and influences. How does your hometown shape your design perspective?

Growing up with a multicultural background, I was influenced by subcultures, sci-fi films, and anime series like ALIEN, Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Dune. These inspired my otherworldly aesthetic in fashion. Each design in our collection is crafted with 30-40 pieces, incorporating signature exoskeleton pattern cutting and unique pleating techniques to create a futuristic look.

Q In your opinion, how does Hong Kong’s unique fashion scene compare to other major cities in terms of sustainability and innovation?

Hong Kong is such an energetic city that allow us to embrace different cultures and values. We definitely have advantages on collaborating with leading industry corporates and organizations to create exciting projects and collaborations on the topic of sustainability considering they are mostly based in both Hong Kong and Guangzhou cities.

Q As a designer based in Hong Kong, how do you navigate the global fashion industry while maintaining your local identity and sustainability principles?

No matter which city we are based in, it is always necessary to identify your brand’s characteristics and aesthetics, these are something that can bring us to the audience around the world without any limitations. At the end of the day, it is about creating something desirable and valuable in order to gain recognition and create positive changes to our industry.

Q Your participation in London Fashion Week has put you on a global stage. What was the experience like, and how do you feel about the international recognition of your sustainable designs?

This was our second time presenting at London Fashion Week (the last being in Feb 2020), and we were beyond excited to showcase our latest creations to the UK audience. We truly believe our otherworldly sustainable designs left a lasting impression, and we can’t wait for everyone to remember our name. It was an unforgettable experience!

Q London Fashion Week is known for being a hotspot for innovation. How do you see sustainable fashion evolving in these kinds of prestigious events in the future?

London is a pioneer in sustainable fashion and holds a special place in my heart. Ms. Orsola de Castro, co-founder of Fashion Revolution, mentored me from my design student days, and I spent a year working with her to strengthen my sustainable practices. With growing demand for sustainable solutions, I believe London Fashion Week will continue to offer opportunities for emerging talents to pursue their dreams.

Q How do you manage the pressures of participating in a high-profile fashion week while staying true to your sustainability values?

We would just focus on our beliefs and follow our design philosophy to create something extraordinary that can also deliver our messages beyond space and time.

Q How do you see the role of designers from non-Western countries like Hong Kong, India, or even Sri Lanka, in shaping the future of global fashion?

There are many exciting designers from around the world are making movements and changes in our industry, I particularly admire Robert Wun (who’s also from Hong Kong) and he has demonstrated and shown us the road is limitless if we dare to dream big.

Q What inspires you most as a designer, and how do you stay motivated to create design that align with your values of sustainability and luxury?

Running my brand for 10 years has been filled with struggles and self-doubt. Turning my passion into a career is challenging, but it also means I don’t give up easily. After presenting a collection or completing a big project, I enjoy taking a break to recharge, helping me stay inspired, motivated, and open to new ideas.

Q If you had to choose one key principle or message that you want consumers to take away from your brand, what would it be?

Always push the boundaries, you only live once!

Q Looking ahead, what’s next for your brand? Are there any new initiatives or projects you’re particularly excited about in the realm of sustainability or fashion?

We are developing sustainable accessory line based on popular demand so stay tuned!

Growing up with a multicultural background, I was influenced by subcultures, sci-fi films, and anime series like ALIEN, Blade Runner, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Dune.
