The event was a testament to the transformative power of artistic expression, showcasing the talents of trainees with special needs whose art speaks louder than words ever could.
In a world that often overlooks the quiet brilliance of those who see life through a different lens, there exists a place where colours transcend their earthly essence. They become voices, emotions, and dreams, vividly expressed across the canvas. The Shiranee Joseph de Saram Foundation (SJDSF), a sanctuary of empowerment, has spent over thirty years nurturing individuals with special needs. Here, they are not merely accepted but encouraged to embrace their fullest potential and step boldly into the light. Founded by Sri Lanka's first Consultant Speech-Language Therapist, Shiranee Joseph-De Saram, the foundation stands as a beacon of hope and opportunity.
On March 22, 2025, the SJDSF Centre in Nawala came alive with a kaleidoscope of emotions, as the foundation hosted an extraordinary art exhibition to commemorate World Down Syndrome Day and Autism Awareness Day. The event was a testament to the transformative power of artistic expression, showcasing the talents of trainees with special needs whose art speaks louder than words ever could.
Each piece on display was more than just a painting; it was a story of resilience, joy, and boundless creativity. The audience was captivated by the brilliance of these remarkable artists. Teruni, radiating with pride, boldly declared, “I’m the best artist!” before humbly adding, “Actually, Varsha comes first, and then me.” Dilshan, a young man of extraordinary talent, stood beside his creations, five or six stunning works, each one more exquisite than the last. His eyes sparkled with a pride that needed no words. Kaveen, with a quiet but powerful passion, shared his intricate painting of Colombo, a reimagined vision of the city, brought to life under the guidance of Ms. Janaki, the devoted mentor behind many of these remarkable pieces.
The excitement among the artists was infectious. “Of course!” Teruni beamed when asked if she was enjoying the exhibition. “I came here right after my Bollywood dance class!” That same energy radiated through every participant, their faces lighting up as they stood beside their masterpieces, basking in the admiration of all who had gathered.
More than just an exhibition, the event was an opportunity for visitors to support, uplift, and celebrate the transformative power of belief in human potential. The SJDSF has spent decades proving that ability is not defined by diagnosis but by the will to create, to express, and to thrive.
As the event drew to a close, guests left with far more than artwork; they carried with them a renewed sense of inspiration and a deep appreciation for the resilience of the human spirit. The colours of the day lingered in their minds, a vivid reminder that true artistry knows no boundaries, and that with the right support, every individual has the power to shine.
