Episode One: From Finance to Food - The Story of yhangry
Heinin Zhang and Siddhi Mittal founded yhangry in 2019 while working demanding jobs in finance. As professionals who loved hosting but struggled to find the time to cook elaborate meals, they identified a gap in the market; an easy way to hire private chefs for home dining. This realization led to the creation of yhangry, a platform designed to connect customers with talented chefs, making luxury dining experiences accessible and stress-free. Before launching yhangry, Heinin Zhang worked in fixed-income sales at Goldman Sachs and Barclays, managing hedge funds and institutional asset managers. Siddhi Mittal, a Columbia University computer science graduate, worked as a financial bonds trader at Barclays in Canary Wharf, where the two met. Their shared vision for yhangry was twofold: to provide an affordable private dining experience for customers and to empower chefs with a flexible platform that enables them to showcase their skills while earning fair wages.
The start-up gained momentum in 2019 when it was accepted into the Google for Start-ups Female Founders Residency Program. Encouraged by early success, Heinin and Siddhi took the bold step of quitting their finance careers to work on yhangry full-time. They launched their first website in December 2019, just before the pandemic. When COVID-19 lockdowns disrupted traditional dining experiences, they pivoted their business model to offer virtual cooking classes and meal prep delivery, ensuring their brand remained relevant during a challenging time. In 2020, yhangry made its mark on the entrepreneurial world by appearing on BBC’s Dragons’ Den, where they received a £100,000 offer from two Dragons. However, after careful consideration, they decided to walk away from the deal privately and instead raised £1.1 million from a round of angel investors. By 2022, yhangry had joined Y Combinator, the prestigious start-up accelerator that helped launch global giants like Airbnb. With the program’s support, the company strengthened its operations, growing its team to 11 employees and expanding its network to nearly 1,000 chefs across the UK. Since its inception, yhangry has provided unforgettable dining experiences for over 40,000 guests, redefining the way people enjoy restaurant-quality meals in the comfort of their homes.
