Dutch Cyclist Mathieu van der Poel Wins Third Consecutive Paris–Roubaix

 

On April 13, Dutch cyclist Mathieu van der Poel secured his third consecutive victory at the Paris–Roubaix race. The 259.2 km race featured a dramatic duel between van der Poel and world champion Tadej Pogačar. Despite facing challenges, including a puncture, and being hit by a thrown water bottle, van der Poel maintained his lead. He becomes the third rider in history to win the race three times in succession.  

Expo 2025 Opens in Osaka, Japan

Expo 2025 officially opened on April 13 in Osaka, Japan, under the theme, “Designing Future Society for Our Lives.” The six-month event, running until October 13, is expected to attract approximately 28 million visitors. Exhibitions focus on sub-themes like “Saving Lives,” “Empowering Lives,” and “Connecting Lives,” addressing issues such as healthcare, sustainability, and technological innovation. This marks the second time Osaka hosts a World Expo, the first being in 1970.  

Scientists Detect Potential Signs of Life on Exoplanet K2-18b


On April 17, scientists reported detecting dimethyl sulfide and dimethyl disulfide in the atmosphere of exoplanet K2-18b, located 124 light-years away. On Earth, these compounds are typically produced by biological processes, making this the strongest evidence to date of potential life beyond our solar system. Further research is needed to confirm the findings and rule out non-biological sources.  

Small Plane Crashes into Nebraska River, Killing Three

On April 18, a small aircraft crashed into the Platte River near Fremont, Nebraska, resulting in the deaths of all three occupants. The crash occurred shortly after severe hailstorms hit the area. Emergency services utilized drones in the search and recovery operations. The identities of the victims have not been released, and the cause of the crash is under investigation.

U.S. and Iran Resume Indirect Nuclear Talks in Oman

On April 12, the United States and Iran commenced indirect negotiations in Muscat, Oman, aiming to reach a new nuclear agreement. Mediated by Omani officials, the discussions lasted over two hours, with both sides describing them as productive. The talks are set to continue next week. President Trump has emphasized that Iran must not acquire nuclear weapons, warning of potential military action if diplomacy fails. Russia has stated it will not assist Iran militarily but believes any U.S. invasion would be unsuccessful

World Snooker Championship 2025 Begins in Sheffield, UK


The 2025 World Snooker Championship commenced on April 19 at Sheffield’s Crucible Theatre, featuring top players like defending champion Kyren Wilson, Ronnie O’Sullivan, Judd Trump, and Mark Selby. The tournament runs until May 5, with a total prize fund of £2.395 million. The winner will receive £500,000. Fans can watch the matches live on BBC and iPlayer.

 

U.S. Airstrikes on Yemeni Oil Terminal Result in Over 80 Deaths

On April 17, 2025, the U.S. conducted 14 airstrikes on the Ras Isa oil terminal in Houthi-controlled Yemen, killing at least 80 people and injuring over 170. The U.S. military stated the strikes aimed to degrade the Houthis’ economic resources. The Houthis condemned the attack as a war crime, noting that many victims were civilian oil workers. The incident has intensified regional tensions, with Iran and Hamas denouncing the strikes and the Houthis launching retaliatory missile attacks.
